Hungarian Farmers Warn Against Ukraine’s EU Accession

Ukraine’s Accession to EU Would be a “Catastrophe” for European Farmers, Hungarian Expert Warns

In a recent statement on public radio, István Jakab, the head of Hungarian farmers association Magosz, expressed his concerns about Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union. According to Jakab, this move would be a “catastrophe” for European farmers, especially those in neighbouring countries.

Jakab pointed out that Ukraine’s vast farmland of 41 million hectares and its large food industry plants could spell ruin for Europe’s farm and food sector. He highlighted that most of Ukraine’s largest farms are foreign-owned, by investors from countries like the United States, Arab nations, Germany, Norway, and China. These foreign investors have a fundamental interest in Ukraine joining the EU.

One of the major concerns raised by Jakab is the use of pesticides and herbicides in Ukraine that have been banned in the EU, as well as the country’s unrestricted use of yield boosters, antibiotics, and GMO farm products. These practices put European farmers at a significant disadvantage.

Agriculture Minister István Nagy also expressed his worries about the potential consequences of Ukraine’s EU accession, stating that it could lead to “unforeseeable and irreversible” changes in Europe’s farm sector. Nagy emphasized that European farmers would struggle to compete with Ukraine’s large farms, which are supported by Western capital and not bound by EU agricultural rules.

In the face of these concerns, Nagy reassured that the government would defend farmers’ interests and ensure that their livelihoods are not put at risk. He underlined the importance of maintaining farm subsidies and protecting European farmers from unfair competition.

Overall, the debate surrounding Ukraine’s potential accession to the EU continues to spark controversy and raise important questions about the future of European agriculture. It remains to be seen how this issue will be addressed by policymakers and stakeholders in the coming months.
