Hungarian FM accuses EU of escalating war

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó criticized the European Union’s pro-war policy and called out the European Commission’s proposal for households to prepare a 72-hour survival kit as unacceptable. In a recent interview, Szijjártó emphasized that neither the EU nor its member states face any imminent threat of war, including from Russia. He instead pointed to Brussels’ pro-war stance as the current source of danger for war escalation.
Szijjártó denounced the EU’s handling of the war crisis, labeling it as lacking seriousness, competitiveness, and common sense. He referred to the survival kit proposal as “shocking and baseless hysteria” created by EU politicians pushing for war.
The minister highlighted the absence of European politicians from peace negotiations and criticized their failure in policymaking over the past three years, resulting in damage to EU countries and Ukraine. Szijjártó urged European leaders to support US President’s peace efforts instead of undermining them.
Addressing the financial implications of the war, Szijjártó questioned the whereabouts of billions of euros given to Ukraine by Brussels, while noting the negative impacts on European citizens due to inflation, price increases, and heightened energy and food prices caused by the conflict.
Szijjártó warned against the risks of Ukraine’s EU accession, highlighting the financial, economic, and security threats it poses. He criticized the disregard of pro-war politicians towards these dangers and expressed concerns about Hungary’s upcoming vote on Ukraine’s accelerated entry into the EU.
In conclusion, Szijjártó’s remarks reflect growing unease with the EU’s war policy and call for a shift towards peace negotiations and responsible policymaking to address the ongoing crisis.
