Hungarian Foreign Minister Calls for Real Peace Talks Amid Council of Europe Anniversary
In a recent Facebook post, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó called for real peace talks instead of sending weapons and discussing nuclear war. Szijjártó expressed his disappointment with the missed opportunity for peace during the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe, citing Russia’s exclusion as a key factor.
According to Szijjártó, the Council of Europe was on the verge of adopting a resolution recognizing Ukrainian President Zelensky’s peace plan as the only viable option. However, Szijjártó deemed this as unacceptable, advocating for the inclusion of other peace plans as well. When his proposal was rejected, Szijjártó vetoed the resolution, preventing its passage.
Szijjártó emphasized Hungary’s commitment to peace, especially in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine. He stressed the importance of saving lives through ceasefire and diplomatic negotiations, rather than resorting to armed conflict. Szijjártó highlighted the tragic loss of Hungarian lives in the war, particularly among the ethnic Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
The foreign minister criticized the exclusion of Russia from the Council of Europe, stating that it hindered direct dialogue and conflict resolution. Szijjártó urged for a diplomatic approach to resolve the conflict, emphasizing the futility of warfare. He also called for the restoration of Azerbaijan’s rights within the Council of Europe and emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of ethnic minorities.
As the Council of Europe plays a crucial role in promoting peace and human rights, Szijjártó hoped that the new EU officials elected after the recent elections would continue to uphold these values. Ultimately, Szijjártó’s message was clear: real peace talks involving all stakeholders are essential for resolving conflicts and preventing further loss of life.
