Hungarian Foreign Minister Criticizes Biden Administration for Sanctions Impacting Central Europe

The Biden administration’s recent sanctions could have a negative impact on Central Europe, warned Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. In a statement on Sunday, Szijjártó expressed concern that the sanctions on a company critical to Serbia’s oil supply may lead to a decrease in crude oil imports to the region, resulting in higher demand for refined petrol and diesel and potential price increases.

Szijjártó emphasized the importance of close consultations with regional partners to mitigate the sanctions’ effects on fuel prices and protect the interests of Hungarian and Central European citizens. Rising fuel prices not only burden individuals but also have a broader negative impact on economic output, which the government aims to prevent.

On a positive note, Szijjártó welcomed the upcoming presidency of Joe Biden, noting that the incoming administration sees Hungary as a friend rather than an enemy. Despite the challenges posed by the sanctions, Hungary remains committed to maintaining strong relationships with its regional allies and striving to minimize any adverse consequences on the local population.
