Hungarian Foreign Minister Discusses Positive Discrimination in Ukraine

Georgia Making Significant Progress Towards EU Membership Candidacy, says Hungarian Foreign Minister
In a recent Facebook post, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó expressed his optimism about Georgia’s chances of receiving EU membership candidacy in the autumn. He emphasized that Georgia has made significant progress in fulfilling the requirements set by the European Union.
The positive statement came after talks between Szijjártó and his Georgian counterpart, Ilia Darchiashvili, during which they reviewed the European Commission’s interim report on Georgia’s progress. Szijjártó highlighted that Hungary sees no obstacles for Georgia to receive the candidate status.
While the focus of recent discussions has been on the European Union’s integration of the Western Balkans, Szijjártó emphasized that there are other countries eager to be allowed in, and Georgia deserves fair consideration. He expressed his belief that Georgia is not in any worse shape than Moldova and Ukraine, both of which were granted candidate status.
Szijjártó also criticized the EU for treating Georgia unfairly in the past and failing to recognize its accomplishments. He mentioned that Hungary has been continuously aiding Georgia in meeting the EU’s requirements and hopes that the European Commission and member states will not employ double standards in the case of Georgia.
Georgia’s progress towards EU membership candidacy is a positive development for the country’s aspirations for closer integration with the European Union. With Hungary’s support and belief in Georgia’s potential, it remains to be seen whether the autumn will bring the much-anticipated candidate status for Georgia.
