Hungarian Foreign Minister Discusses Winter Preparedness with Gazprom CEO
Hungary Ensures Continuous Natural Gas Supplies for Heating Season
Hungary is prepared for the upcoming heating season as natural gas supplies from the south remain uninterrupted, announced Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade. Szijjártó emphasized that the country’s energy security is guaranteed in the long term.
During his visit to St Petersburg, Szijjártó held discussions with Alexey Miller, the CEO of Russia’s state gas company Gazprom. The importance of the Turk Stream gas pipeline for Hungary’s gas supplies and the 15-year gas purchase agreement signed with Gazprom in 2021 were highlighted during the talks.
Szijjártó stated, “The long-term agreement and the secure transit route in the south guarantee that natural gas delivery for Hungary is uninterrupted and stable despite an extremely difficult geopolitical environment.” He commended Gazprom for meeting their commitments, with reliable transit countries such as Turkiye, Bulgaria, and Serbia ensuring continuous supply of gas from Russia to Hungary.
Last year, Hungary received 5.6 billion cubic meters of gas via Turk Stream, with 4.8 billion cubic meters already received since the beginning of 2024, underscoring the growing importance of the southern route. The country’s gas storage facilities are currently 89 percent full, which could cover 57 percent of Hungary’s annual demand, well above the European average of gas reserves.
Szijjártó reiterated the mutual commitment between Hungary and Gazprom, stating, “Our commitment is the same; this is a mutually beneficial agreement that we would not give up in any way.” He emphasized that purchasing natural gas from Russia does not violate any sanctions and affirmed Hungary’s goal to ensure energy supplies without any restrictions.
With continuous natural gas supplies and a strong partnership with Gazprom, Hungary is well-prepared for the heating season and future energy needs.
