Hungarian Government to Enhance Military Preparedness

Hungary’s new chief of staff, Gábor Böröndi, has stated that he is focused on improving the training and readiness of the Hungarian Armed Forces. In an interview with public broadcaster M1, Böröndi emphasized the necessity of ensuring that the military is capable of defending the country’s interests in case of war, while emphasizing that developments must serve the cause of preventing any escalation of conflicts.

Drawing lessons from the war in Ukraine, Böröndi noted that Hungary’s military had not yet encountered certain forms of air defense involving drones as seen in that conflict, and thus had some deficiencies to remedy. He also emphasized the need for coordination within the military in order to better defend the country’s territory within NATO.

Addressing earlier comments on nuclear deterrence, Böröndi clarified that he was not advocating for Hungary to be involved, but rather pointing out the logic behind European security. He noted that the use of nuclear weapons would result in a “zero sum game without winners” and thus deterrence was necessary to maintain peace.

Böröndi also called for a focus on improving the readiness and training of the Hungarian reserve corps, and expressed his aim to increase the number of participants in shooting drills from 300-400 to 2,000-3,000. He concluded by stating the importance of reviving a “war culture” in the Hungarian Army in the interest of maintaining peace.
