Agriculture Minister István Nagy Warns of Potential Loss of Market Share for EU Farmers
Agriculture Minister István Nagy issued a warning to European Union farmers about the potential consequences of allowing agricultural products from Ukraine into the common market without restriction. Speaking to farmers in Monor, near the capital, Nagy emphasized the significant risk that European farmers could face in terms of market share if Ukraine’s farm sector, which is ten times larger than Hungary’s, is given access to the EU market.
Nagy pointed out that Ukraine operates its farm sector under different circumstances compared to the EU, with the presence of GMO crops and the use of herbicides and pesticides that have been banned in the EU for two decades. He stressed that this poses not only a threat to European farmers but also to the health and safety of some 550 million consumers.
Furthermore, Nagy highlighted the importance of Hungarian farmers protecting their own interests and taking a firm stance against Brussels’ proposed changes to area-based agricultural subsidies.
In light of these developments, it is crucial for EU farmers to remain vigilant and advocate for policies that prioritize their livelihoods and the well-being of consumers.
