Hungarian Heroes’ Day Honored with Photos

Hungarians honored their heroes on Hungarian Heroes’ Day at Fiumei Street cemetery, as Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasized the importance of protecting the free Hungary they fought for. Szalay-Bobrovniczky stated during the ceremony that it is essential for Hungarians to prevent senseless wars fought for the interests of others.
Reflecting on Hungary’s history, Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted how the sacrifices made for the homeland during the first world war were devalued by the communist dictatorship. He noted that the restoration of monuments honoring heroes of the second world war symbolized Hungary’s transition to democracy. The declaration of the memorial day for Hungarian heroes at the turn of the millennium signified a renewed tribute to the country’s heroes and the thousand-year journey taken by its soldiers in defense of the homeland.
Szalay-Bobrovniczky also cautioned against the folly of politicians who dream of war without heeding the voices of the people and soldiers, emphasizing the importance of choosing peace over conflict. The law commemorating Hungarian heroes was passed by Hungary’s parliament on July 19, 2001.
As Hungarians gathered at the cemetery to pay their respects to fallen heroes, Szalay-Bobrovniczky affirmed the nation’s commitment to peace and the desire for a future where heroes are honored in life, not just in death. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of Hungary’s history and the debt owed to those who fought for a free and democratic Hungary.
