Hungarian Ice Cream Maker Named World’s Best in New Ranking
Hungarian chefs have always been known for their culinary talents, and now a Hungarian ice cream maker is making waves in the world of gelato. Ádám Fazekas has been named the best ice cream maker of 2024 by the Gelato Festival World Ranking, further solidifying Hungary’s reputation in the international culinary scene.
The Gelato Festival World Masters, an international competition for artisan ice cream makers, has been a platform for ice cream makers to showcase their skills since 2011. With over eight thousand ice cream creations judged by a panel of experts, the competition is fierce and the stakes are high.
Ádám Fazekas had previously won the Gelato Festival World Masters in 2021 and placed second in the Gelato Festival World Ranking in 2022. Now, in 2024, he has claimed the top prize at the prestigious competition, solidifying his status as a world-class ice cream maker.
At a press conference held in Rome, Fazekas’ raspberry-flavoured pistachio ice cream stole the show, showcasing his creativity and talent. Competing against over 1,200 entries from around the globe, Fazekas emerged victorious, with Giovanni Bonazzi from Italy and Savannah G. Lee from the United States taking second and third place respectively.
To qualify for the international ranking, ice cream artisans must participate in various events, shows, and festivals for at least two years, earning points along the way. The collaboration between the Gelato Festival, Sigep-IEG Expo, and Carpigiani aims to recognize and promote artisans in the industry, highlighting their dedication and skill.
Fazekas’ method stands out for its use of natural ingredients, with even the milk sourced locally from a family farm. His ice cream shop in Budapest offers unique flavors such as sour pickle, herb feta, and avocado lemon, alongside traditional favorites like vanilla and chocolate. Guests can sample these delectable creations at the Fazekas Confectionery in Budapest and Rétság, Nógrád County.
