Hungary Commits to Strengthening NATO Defence Capabilities
Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, emphasized the country’s commitment to being a loyal and reliable NATO ally during a meeting in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Szijjártó highlighted the importance of NATO returning to its original goals of being the world’s strongest defence alliance in the new era of world politics.
He underscored Hungary’s significant contributions to NATO’s defence capacities, with the country consistently spending more than 2 percent of its GDP on defence since 2025. Szijjártó noted that Hungary is a frontrunner in defence developments within NATO, allocating close to half of its defence budget towards this goal.
Furthermore, Hungary’s NATO multinational division center, aimed at bolstering the alliance’s eastern flank, is set to achieve full operational capability next week. The number of Hungarian troops participating in NATO missions worldwide has exceeded 1,000, showcasing the country’s commitment to collective security.
Additionally, the Hungarian government has agreed to participate in the policing of Baltic airspace, with the Hungarian Air Force deploying to Lithuania for four months with troops and fighters. This involvement demonstrates Hungary’s active role in ensuring the security of NATO member states in the region.
Overall, Hungary’s dedication to strengthening NATO’s defence capabilities highlights the country’s role as a reliable ally within the alliance. As geopolitical challenges continue to evolve, Hungary remains committed to upholding the principles and goals of NATO for the security and stability of its members.
