Hungarian Minister Calls for Fundamental Change in International Politics to Address Crises

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó highlighted the urgent need for fundamental changes in international politics to address the severe crises facing the global community. In a statement made in New York on Monday, Szijjártó emphasized the importance of returning to a foundation of mutual respect and ending the misuse of peace as a mere word.

Describing the ongoing UN General Assembly as the tensest of the past decade, Szijjártó pointed out that there are approximately thirty wars or armed conflicts currently ongoing worldwide. He warned that two of these conflicts have the potential to significantly threaten global security at any moment, with two others at high risk of escalation.

Amidst a summit focusing on issues such as water supplies, population growth, and environmental sustainability, Szijjártó stressed that the pressing matters of peace and war must take priority. He posed critical questions about the possibility of avoiding a third world war and preventing the escalation of conflicts in regions like the Middle East and Ukraine.

Calling for a shift towards diplomacy-driven policymaking based on dialogue, Szijjártó underscored the importance of supporting those advocating for peace and avoiding threats and discredit towards them. He also addressed Europe’s approach towards the global South, noting that countries like Chad, Oman, and Congo are resistant to being dictated by external powers.

Szijjártó highlighted the challenges faced by southern countries due to wars in Europe, expressing their confusion over being burdened with the consequences of conflicts far from their borders. He questioned why nations like Hungary should bear the costs of wars that they are not involved in.

As part of Hungary’s efforts to support countries impacted by conflicts, Szijjártó mentioned the launch of a 200 million euro tied aid program in Chad. The minister’s statements reflect a call for a reevaluation of international politics to address current crises and promote genuine peace and cooperation on a global scale.
