Hungarian Minister Fears ‘History’s Greatest Humanitarian Catastrophe’
International Community Urged to Prevent Escalation of Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, says Hungarian Foreign Minister
The Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, has called on the international community to unite in efforts to prevent the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Speaking at a meeting of representatives from the European Union (EU) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Muscat, Szijjártó expressed the Hungarian government’s concern and emphasized the need for a responsible approach. He warned that the current developments could potentially lead to the gravest humanitarian disaster in history.
Szijjártó noted that it is regrettable that the conflict has flared up at such a critical time when efforts for stabilization were underway and significant steps towards peace had been taken. He emphasized that it is crucial to achieve sustainable peace in the Middle East and highlighted the potential role GCC members can play in preventing further escalation. The group’s intervention has previously had a positive and stabilizing effect in other regional conflicts, and Szijjártó expressed hope that their efforts would contribute to a settlement that enhances European security.
Furthermore, the Hungarian Foreign Minister stressed the significance of reinforcing cooperation between the EU and GCC, stating that it is needed more than ever. He called for talks on various issues such as lifting visa requirements and establishing a free trade agreement with GCC members.
Szijjártó also highlighted the importance of EU-GCC cooperation in addressing global humanitarian crises. He recognized that armed conflicts, wars, and the threat of terrorism pose significant triggers for waves of migration. He emphasized that the security situation worldwide directly impacts migratory pressure on Europe, and therefore settling armed conflicts peacefully is in Europe’s best interest.
In a separate statement, Szijjártó described the foreign ministerial meeting between the EU and Arab states of the Gulf as of historic importance in light of the latest developments in the Middle East. He expressed hope that the European participants would approach the meeting with sincerity and respect, avoiding criticism and lectures. Prior to the meeting, he held bilateral talks with Arab counterparts, including the foreign minister of Oman, Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, who has shown a commitment to bilateral relations by deciding to establish an embassy in Budapest.
During the meeting, discussions centered on energy cooperation between Oman and Hungary. Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s dedication to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy use but emphasized the need for progress at a sensible pace without damaging the economy’s competitiveness. He highlighted the potential of green hydrogen developments and announced that Hungary has become Oman’s first central European partner in green hydrogen research and development based on a recent agreement.
The call for international cooperation and responsible approaches comes at a critical juncture, with tensions mounting in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The urgency to prevent further escalation and work towards peaceful resolutions is crucial to avoid devastating humanitarian consequences.
