Hungarian Minority Party Secures Key Roles in New Romanian Government
Romania’s New Government Structure Includes Hungarian-Lead Ministries
Romania’s political landscape is undergoing a significant change as the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL), and the Hungarian minority party RMDSZ (Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania) have reached an agreement on the new government structure. The key development is RMDSZ taking leadership of two crucial ministries: the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Development.
The coalition government, slated to be inaugurated soon, has set ambitious goals to stabilize Romania’s financial situation and implement strategic reforms. Notably, for the first time in Romania’s history, a Hungarian, Barna Tánczos, will serve as the Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. This appointment is particularly significant as Tánczos will also be a member of the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT), adding a new dimension to RMDSZ’s involvement in national security matters.
Hunor Kelemen, the president of RMDSZ, expressed the coalition’s commitment to addressing Romania’s complex financial challenges without imposing additional burdens on citizens. Attila Cseke will also play a key role as the head of the Ministry of Development, a position he held previously.
The new government will comprise 16 ministries, with PSD controlling eight, PNL holding six, and RMDSZ leading two. The distribution of ministries reflects a diverse set of responsibilities, with PSD overseeing defense, health, and transport, while PNL managing education, foreign affairs, and energy.
Emphasizing the coalition’s priorities, Mr. Kelemen highlighted the focus on economic predictability, supporting public investments, and creating a favorable environment for entrepreneurs. The government’s agenda includes maintaining financial stability, avoiding additional taxes on citizens, and implementing programs that benefit families and youth.
With these new ministerial appointments and clear priorities, the coalition aims to effectively navigate Romania’s challenges and set the country on a path towards sustainable growth and prosperity in the coming years.
