Hungarian Opposition Leader: Strong Europe Essential
Klára Dobrev, the leader of the opposition Democratic Coalition, Socialists, and Párbeszéd parties, made a strong statement on European wages, pensions, and health care at a joint celebration in Budapest on International Labour Day. Dobrev emphasized the need for a Europe that can care for all Hungarian people, even if it means standing up against the current government.
During the event, Dobrev highlighted the challenges Hungary faces within the EU, including low wages and pensions, inadequate healthcare services, and a decline in public education. She also criticized the government for intimidating Hungarian workers and advocated for a left-wing, green, social-democratic government to bring about positive change.
Gergely Karácsony, the mayor of Budapest, echoed Dobrev’s sentiments, expressing a bittersweet tone towards the 20th anniversary of Hungary’s EU accession. Karácsony emphasized the need for a stronger Europe that benefits the people rather than the elite, calling for a shift in the state’s priorities towards education and healthcare.
Imre Komjáthi of the Socialists emphasized the importance of strengthening trade unions as the immune system of working people and society.
