EU Officials Meet in Hungary to Discuss Sustainable Freshwater Aquaculture
Officials from EU member states responsible for fishery convened in Balatonfüred, western Hungary, for an informal meeting focused on promoting economically and environmentally sustainable freshwater aquaculture and innovative solutions in the sector. The meeting, hosted by the Hungarian presidency, brought together directors general and attaches in the sector between July 8 and 10 to discuss a comprehensive approach to developing freshwater and maritime aquaculture.
According to the agriculture ministry, the demand for fish within the EU is on the rise, making it essential to enhance the sector’s competitiveness. The Hungarian presidency aims to shift towards increased consumption of freshwater and sea fish, aligning with the Aquaculture Strategy outlined by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. This strategy aims to elevate the industry’s role and drive growth in the sector.
