Hungarian Public Media Honors Pope Francis; National Day of Mourning Declared for Funeral
Hungary’s public media is paying tribute to Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88, with special broadcasts today. MTVA announced in a statement that various channels will be airing programs dedicated to the memory of the beloved pontiff.
Duna and Duna World will be broadcasting a program highlighting Pope Francis’ meetings with Hungarians, as well as a studio program and a documentary. Following this, Duna will air “Francis, the People’s Pope”, a biographical film about the life of Pope Francis. Additionally, Duna World will be showing a documentary on the key messages of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest.
M5 channel will feature a special program in its history segment, followed by a documentary titled “Our Pope” and a film on the life of Saint Peter. Meanwhile, M2 Petofi TV will be broadcasting Liszt’s Requiem performed by the renowned Saint Ephraim Male Choir.
Kossuth Radio will be airing Pope Francis’s thoughts and a memorial program highlighting the most important moments of his life and papacy. The funeral of Pope Francis will be broadcast by M1 and Duna channels, as well as Kossuth Radio.
In a related development, Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén announced that Hungary will declare the day of Pope Francis’s funeral a national day of mourning. In a statement on the official government website, Semjén expressed shock at the news of the Holy Father’s passing and emphasized the nation’s gratitude for him.
Semjén highlighted the special relationship between Pope Francis and the Hungarian people, noting the pope’s visits to Hungary and his support for peace. He mentioned how the pope always greeted Hungarians with a heartfelt “God bless you!” in Hungarian, showcasing the depth of their connection.
