Hungarian Railway Company Advises on Trains Not Suitable for Weather Conditions
Travellers on MÁV Trains in Hungary Face Delays and Sweltering Conditions
In recent days, passengers using MÁV trains in Hungary have been experiencing significant delays and discomfort due to the lack of air conditioning in many carriages. László Kormányos, Deputy CEO of MÁV-Start, explained that the outdated railway cars, which are 40-50 years old, were not designed to withstand the current climatic conditions.
As temperatures soar in Hungary, many people are trying to escape the heat by traveling to cooler locations across the country. However, MÁV is facing a series of challenges, including downed overhead wires, delays, and tracks that are melting in the extreme heat. Even on trains with air conditioning, the system often fails to provide adequate cooling.
While MÁV is distributing water at stations to help passengers stay hydrated, they are recommending that people postpone their travels or consider using bus services instead. Kormányos emphasized that the MÁV staff is working hard to alleviate the situation, but with only 40% of trains equipped with air conditioning and many of those systems functioning poorly, the conditions on board can be uncomfortable.
In light of the current heatwave, MÁV has advised passengers who are sensitive to extreme heat or have health conditions to travel only if absolutely necessary. They have suggested using Volánbusz intercity buses as an alternative, as 84% of these buses are equipped with air conditioning. MÁV also recommends using county and national passes for travel on these buses.
As the hot weather continues to pose challenges for passengers and railway staff alike, taking precautions and considering alternative modes of transportation can help ensure a more comfortable and safe journey.
