Hungarian State Folk Ensemble’s Romanian Tour
The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble to Tour Transylvania
The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble is set to tour Transylvania, formerly part of Hungary and now part of Romania, between November 10-16. They will be visiting six venues in five cities during their visit to the region.
The decision to organize a series of performances in Transylvania was made by the management of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, the Hungarian Heritage House, and the Transylvanian Heritage House Foundation. The ensemble had not participated in a long tour of Transylvania in quite some time and were also invited to the Folk Dance and Folk Music Meeting ed.33 in Sfântu Gheorghe, where they had previously performed. This time, they will be presenting a performance of “Dawn Moon” on November 10 and a Transylvanian-themed production in Cluj-Napoca’s Market Square the following evening.
The ensemble will also be presenting an interactive educational program titled “Tracing our folk dances” on November 11, aimed at giving the younger generation the chance to learn about folk traditions from the pure source.
The idea behind the tour was to visit the far ends of the country by performing “Dawn Moon” in several places on the way back. The tour will cover Sfântu Gheorghe, Odorheiu Secuiesc, Targu Mures, and Arad.
The ensemble’s performance of “Dawn Moon” is a complex piece of dance theater that includes contemporary dance elements, communal singing, and prose-drama alongside folk dance. The composition is a lyrical representation of the female soul and the life cycles of women, and it praises the work of the renowned Transylvanian choreographer-director Orza Călin.
The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, founded in 1950, has come a long way since its inception and aims to familiarize Hungarians and people of other countries with the traditions of Hungarian songs, dance, and music. Their performances include historical music and dance, authentic folk music and folk dance, dramatic play, world music, and spectacle theater based on traditional elements.
The ensemble’s tour of Transylvania promises to be an exciting and culturally enriching experience, offering audiences a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich traditions of Hungarian folk music and dance.
