Hungarian Students Claim Silver Medals at Linguistics International Student Olympiad
Hungarian school students have showcased their linguistic skills on the international stage, bringing home two silver medals from the 21st International Linguistics Olympiad in Brasilia. The competition, which took place between July 23 and 31, saw participants from 38 countries vying for top honors.
Máté Gergely Virág, an 11th grader from Eötvös József High School, and Rudolf Virág, who recently graduated from Mihály Fazekas High School in Budapest, emerged victorious, each securing a silver medal. The HUN-REN Linguistics Research Center proudly announced their achievement on Saturday.
The challenging tasks at the Olympiad involved deciphering the workings of five rare languages, including Koryak from the Chukotko-Kamchatkan language family and Yanyuwa from the Australian Aboriginal Pama-Nyungan family. Additionally, teams were tasked with a lexicostatistical assignment to test their analytical and problem-solving skills.
Hungary’s success at the event highlights the country’s commitment to nurturing linguistic talent and promoting excellence in the field. Congratulations to Máté Gergely Virág and Rudolf Virág for their outstanding achievement, showcasing the exceptional skills and knowledge of Hungarian students on a global platform.
