According to the Ministry of National Economy, Hungary is becoming an increasingly attractive tourist destination at an international level, with a 10 percent increase in overnight stays.

Data from the Hungarian Central Statistics Office (KSH) and the National Tourism Data Service Centre (NTAK) revealed that 1.3 million guests stayed in Hungary in December 2024, marking an 11 percent increase compared to the previous year. The popularity of Hungary as a tourist destination is on the rise among both domestic and international visitors, with over 20 percent more guests arriving from abroad in December 2024.

In December, domestic accommodation registered nearly 3 million guest nights, an 8.4 percent increase from the previous year. Domestic guests spent 1.2 million nights in hotels, while foreign guests spent 1.7 million nights, a nearly 15 percent increase from December 2023.

Notably, approximately 47 percent of the country’s total accommodation turnover in December was registered in rural areas, with domestic guests accounting for 74 percent of the nights spent outside Budapest, particularly at popular destinations like Lake Balaton.

In Budapest, the number of nights spent by foreign guests increased by almost 20 percent, leading to a substantial rise in revenue for accommodation establishments, reaching nearly HUF 90 billion (EUR 220.6 million). Overall, revenue from restaurants in December 2024 amounted to HUF 166.2 billion (EUR 407 million), reflecting a 10.4 percent increase from the previous year.

Throughout 2024, a total of 18 million guests arrived at accommodation establishments in Hungary, an 11 percent increase from 2023. Domestic guests accounted for around 9.3 million of these guests, while 8.7 million arrived from abroad.

Lake Balaton once again emerged as the most popular tourist region in 2024, with domestic guests making up 70 percent of the total number of nights spent in the countryside. The Ministry highlighted the increasing spending by Hungarian families on travel and recreation, as evidenced by the growth in consumption, housing transactions, and domestic tourism.

Tourism remains a strategically vital sector in Hungary, supporting the livelihoods of approximately 400,000 families and serving as a key driver of the economy. With its remarkable performance in 2024, the tourism industry has established itself as a cornerstone of economic growth in the country.
