Hungarians Drop 13 Places on World Happiness Report 2025
In a disappointing turn of events, Hungary has dropped 13 places on the World Happiness Report 2025 compared to the previous year’s report. The latest survey found that Hungarians are now ranked 69th on the list, slipping from their previous position of 56th in 2024. This decline in happiness levels places Hungary below countries like Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden, while still ranking higher than some neighboring nations like Romania, Serbia, and Slovakia.
According to the data from 24.hu, Hungarians are now less happy than people in countries like China, Russia, and Uzbekistan. The report, based on responses from the years 2022 to 2024, uses the Cantril Ladder method to gauge individuals’ overall life satisfaction on a scale from 0 to 10. Finland, for the eighth consecutive time, topped the list as the world’s happiest country.
Factors contributing to a nation’s happiness ranking include GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption levels. Despite these considerations, Hungary’s drop in happiness levels may stem from issues such as low life expectancy rates in certain regions of the country.
On a positive note, countries like the Netherlands, Norway, Luxembourg, and even Mexico rank among the top 10 happiest nations in the world. In Central Europe, countries like Austria, Slovenia, and Czechia lead the happiness rankings, while neighboring nations like Serbia, Romania, and Slovakia also rank higher than Hungary.
