Hungary Exceeds Climate Targets, Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Hungary has announced a significant achievement in its efforts to combat climate change, with a remarkable 43 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions between 1990 and 2023. Energy Minister Csaba Lantos shared the positive news on Friday, highlighting that the country had surpassed its 2030 climate policy target of a 40 percent reduction.
In a statement from the energy ministry, Lantos revealed that last year alone, emissions had been reduced by 9.5 percent, with the energy sector leading the way with an 11 percent decrease. The ministry credited increased consumer awareness and milder winter weather for contributing to a one-fifth reduction in emissions from major power and heating plants.
Moreover, Hungary has made significant strides in transitioning away from fossil fuels, with a notable 18 percent decrease in fossil energy production and a 47 percent increase in solar energy production. These advancements underline the country’s commitment to embracing renewable energy sources and sustainability.
According to recent data from Eurostat, Hungary ranks in the first third of European Union members in terms of reducing emissions, showcasing its dedication to meeting climate targets. Lantos emphasized that these results demonstrate Hungary’s progress towards building a sustainable economy and fulfilling its environmental responsibilities.
