Hungary and Armenia Forge New Diplomatic Relationship

Hungary and Armenia to Strengthen Diplomatic Ties with New Embassies

Hungary and Armenia are embarking on a new chapter in their diplomatic relations by opening embassies in each other’s capitals, announced Péter Szijjártó, the Hungarian foreign minister, on Monday.

In a statement released by the ministry, Szijjártó noted that the two countries are looking to enhance their economic cooperation following the recent ratification of a bilateral economic cooperation agreement by Armenia’s parliament.

“I have congratulated my Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan, on Armenia and Azerbaijan’s achievement of an important milestone in their peace talks by finalizing the text of their peace treaty,” Szijjártó stated.

While acknowledging that there is still a long way to go in reaching a lasting peace agreement, Szijjártó pointed out that the progress made could serve as a source of encouragement for those working towards resolving other conflicts.

Notably, plans for the opening of an Armenian embassy in Budapest were announced a year ago, but progress had stalled. However, with Wizz Air launching a service to Yerevan, it seems that steps are being taken to strengthen the ties between the two nations.

Szijjártó also touched upon the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, describing it as “one of many conflicts in the world apart from the war in Ukraine.” He expressed optimism that a recent deal between the two countries could lead to a significant breakthrough in the situation.
