Hungary Backs Restoration of Historic Hungarian Cemetery in US

A century-old cemetery in the US state of Georgia has been re-opened after undergoing a restoration project, thanks to support from Hungary. The cemetery serves as the final resting place for Hungarian vintners who emigrated to the area in the 1880s.

Deputy state secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, Péter Szilágyi, extended his gratitude to the Hungarian Community Church of Georgia for coordinating the restoration efforts. The project received support from the state secretariat for national policy, Gábor Bethlen Fund Management, as well as various companies and private individuals.

Approximately 200 wine-making families from Hungary accepted an invitation from an American businessman to relocate to the west of Georgia in the late 19th century. Their legacy lives on in the cemetery, which serves as a testament to their contributions to the local community.

The restoration of the cemetery not only preserves the historical significance of the site but also highlights the enduring bond between Hungary and the United States. This project serves as a reminder of the shared heritage and cultural connections between the two countries.
