Hungary Calls on Austria to Back Trump’s Ukraine Peace Proposal

Hungary Calls for EU Support for Trump’s Peace Initiative in Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Hungary’s Minister for European Union Affairs, János Bóka, has emphasized the need for the European Union to support U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace initiative to end the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. After a meeting with Austrian counterpart Claudia Plakolm in Budapest, Bóka stated that an immediate ceasefire and meaningful peace talks are essential to bring the war to a swift end.
Bóka highlighted that Hungary believes the EU should promote and back President Trump’s peace initiative rather than hindering it. Additionally, he announced that Hungary will hold a referendum on Ukraine’s potential EU membership, aiming to facilitate open and honest debates on the matter.
The minister also discussed with Plakolm the importance of enhancing the protection of the EU’s external borders and exploring innovative solutions to improve the EU’s migration and refugee policies. Bóka raised concerns about the perceived double standards applied by EU institutions towards Hungary, citing excessive fines instead of support for the country’s efforts in border protection.
During their meeting, the ministers also touched upon various other topics, including the upcoming EU budget, the integration perspective for the Western Balkans, enhancing the EU’s competitiveness, and combating anti-Semitism across Europe. The deep friendship and economic ties between Hungary and Austria were acknowledged, despite differing opinions on certain policy matters, such as the asylum and migration pact.
Plakolm reiterated Austria’s support for the integration of the Western Balkan countries into the EU and emphasized the need to address migration issues effectively within the EU. The Austrian minister also expressed bewilderment at the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that it has damaged the ICC’s credibility.
In conclusion, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and exploring ways to enhance cooperation between their countries. The visit of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to Hungary was also confirmed, highlighting the strategic partnership and historical connections between Hungary and Israel.
