Hungary Establishes New Embassy in Africa

Hungary to Open New Diplomatic Mission in Tanzania
Hungary is set to open a new diplomatic mission in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in September, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó. This decision highlights the significant potential for bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
During a joint press conference with Tanzanian counterpart Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Szijjártó emphasized the importance of focusing on Africa amidst the ongoing global conflicts. He expressed concern about the continent facing severe threats of terrorism and recurring armed conflicts leading to migrant waves towards Europe, posing security challenges.
The fast-growing population in Africa has also led to challenges in the labor market, healthcare, and education, which some countries are struggling to manage independently. Szijjártó stressed the need for a comprehensive economic and development cooperation scheme to address these issues and prevent a humanitarian disaster or intense migration pressure on Europe.
Hungary respects stable and peace-seeking countries in Africa, such as Tanzania, which contributes peacekeepers globally and works towards stability in the region. The minister highlighted the importance of peaceful solutions and territorial integrity in resolving conflicts, such as the one between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Szijjártó welcomed the US-Russia talks as an opportunity to end ongoing wars and establish peace. He also highlighted the growing potential in Hungarian-Tanzanian ties, with bilateral trade turnover quadrupling in the past three years. Hungary plans to launch a $55 million project to develop Tanzania’s water management system and has ongoing development projects to improve the country’s education system, including offering scholarships to Tanzanian university students.
The opening of the new diplomatic mission in Tanzania signifies Hungary’s commitment to strengthening ties with African countries and supporting peace and development initiatives on the continent.
