Hungary Firmly Rejects Accusations of Being a “Spy or Trojan Horse” for Peacebuilding

Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, recently expressed the government’s commitment to pursuing peace in Europe amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a meeting at the United Nations Security Council, Szijjártó emphasized Hungary’s firsthand experience of the negative effects of the war, such as the influx of refugees and economic repercussions.
Szijjártó criticized the European Union’s stance on the conflict, noting that any mention of peace or negotiation is met with suspicion and labeling. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy in resolving the conflict in Ukraine and urged for a return to diplomatic channels to achieve a settlement. The Minister highlighted the need for engaging in dialogue with opposing parties and condemned the stigmatization of countries advocating for peaceful solutions.
Szijjártó also spoke out against the politicization of the UN and emphasized the organization’s role in facilitating dialogue between conflicting parties. He stressed the importance of respecting sovereign states’ rights to negotiate with whomever they choose.
The Minister’s remarks underscore Hungary’s commitment to peace and diplomacy in the face of regional conflicts. As the country continues to navigate the challenges posed by the war in Ukraine, Szijjártó’s message resonates with the importance of prioritizing peace to ensure a prosperous future for Europe.
