Hungary Observes a National Day of Mourning for Pope Francis
On April 26, 2025, Hungary paid tribute to Pope Francis with a solemn national day of mourning. The government declared the day to honor the beloved leader, reflecting the nation’s deep respect and sorrow at his passing.
At 9:00 AM, a formal ceremony took place in Kossuth Lajos Square in front of the Hungarian Parliament. The national flag was raised, then lowered to half-mast, accompanied by military honors. This ceremonial act served as a poignant expression of national sympathy.
The event featured a performance by the national orchestra, which played the Hungarian National Anthem, "Hymn," along with the patriotic song, "Word." Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky attended the service, emphasizing the government’s acknowledgment of Pope Francis’ impactful service to the world.
In accordance with the government decree, black flags were displayed on state and municipal institutions, as well as public buildings, reinforcing the atmosphere of mourning throughout the nation. Citizens were encouraged to observe a moment of silence to honor the Pope’s legacy and contributions.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén were part of an official delegation attending the funeral service at the Vatican, which was led by President Tamás. Their presence underscored the importance of the occasion and Hungary’s solidarity in mourning the Pope.
