Hungary Pushes for Ukraine Peace Summit with Putin

Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, recently discussed the possibility of a peace summit with Russia to end the war in Ukraine. In an interview with the Russian state-owned news outlet RIA Novosti, Szijjártó expressed his desire to have both Russia and Ukraine at the negotiating table for the future peace conference. This proposal contradicts the concept of the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, organized in Switzerland, where Moscow was not invited.
Meanwhile, in the European Parliament, the Patriots for Europe group initiated a debate to condemn political violence following the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. However, the proposal was voted down by the EP, as reported by Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál. Gál criticized the EP for not taking action against political violence in Europe, citing incidents such as the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and the case of Italian activist Ilaria Salis, who was detained in Hungary on assault charges before becoming an MEP.
During the EP vote on Vice-Presidents, Gál expressed disappointment that PfE candidates were rejected in favor of others, calling it disrespectful to the millions of voters behind PfE and democratic principles. The initiative to condemn political violence was ultimately rejected with 339 votes against, 119 in favor, and 15 abstentions.
As tensions and discussions around political violence and peace efforts continue, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape future relations and actions within the European Parliament and on the international stage.
