Hungary Ready to Mediate Between West and Russia at Swiss Peace Summit
Hungary has positioned itself as the only European country maintaining open communication with Russia amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has offered to mediate between the West and Russia during a peace conference in Switzerland.
At the two-day international summit in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, attended by representatives from 92 countries, Hungary stands out as a key mediator due to its maintained ties with Russia. While world leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are present, Russian President Vladimir Putin was notably not invited to the conference.
Minister Szijjártó emphasized Hungary’s willingness to facilitate dialogue and negotiations with Russia in order to protect peace and prevent further loss of life. Despite the absence of major global powers like the United States and China, Hungary stands ready to play a crucial role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
With approximately 150,000 Hungarians residing in western Ukraine, Hungary understands the impact of the war on both Ukrainian citizens and the Hungarian minority in the region. As Szijjártó expressed, Hungary is committed to delivering messages of peace and unity to Moscow and St. Petersburg to ensure the safety and well-being of families affected by the conflict.
