Hungary Relinquishes Veto on Sanctions, Receives Ambiguous Promises in Exchange

Hungary Secures Guarantees to Protect Energy Security, Avoids Veto on Sanctions Extension
Hungary has scored a major victory in protecting its energy security after receiving guarantees from the European Commission (EC), announced Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó in Brussels on Monday. This success allowed Hungary to avoid vetoing the extension of sanctions against Russia, a move that would have had significant economic ramifications.
The decision to extend economic sanctions against Russia was a crucial one, as Hungary has suffered 19 billion euros in damage over the past three years due to these measures. Szijjártó emphasized that Ukraine’s actions have put the energy supply of Hungary and other Central European countries at risk, posing threats to national security and sovereignty.
The Hungarian government had set clear conditions for the EC, seeking protection for Hungary’s energy security, the preservation of the TurkStream natural gas pipeline, the safeguarding of Ukrainian oil transit, and the resumption of natural gas transport through Ukraine.
“We have received guarantees from the EC that are essential for the future of our energy security,” Szijjártó stated, highlighting the EU’s commitment to ensuring the integrity of energy infrastructure supplying member states.
Despite this positive development, concerns remain about Ukraine’s use of energy supplies for political leverage. The absence of punitive measures in case of non-compliance with contractual obligations leaves Central-Eastern Europe vulnerable to the whims of the Ukrainian government.
While Hungary supported the sanctions extension this time, Szijjártó made it clear that future decisions will be made based on Hungary’s interests. The government remains steadfast in its stance that EU sanctions should not endanger the Hungarian energy system.
The EC’s readiness to engage with Ukraine on energy supply issues, with input from Hungary and Slovakia, underscores the importance of cooperation in ensuring stable energy flows. However, concerns persist about Ukraine’s reliability in maintaining gas and oil supplies.
The latest developments reflect Hungary’s diplomatic success in safeguarding its energy security interests. The country’s assertive stance on protecting its energy infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted supply has solidified its position in the ongoing energy security landscape.
