Hungary to be the Guest of Honor at Annecy International Animation Film Festival
Hungary is set to be the guest of honor at the upcoming Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which will kick off on June 8. This special recognition comes in celebration of the 110th anniversary of Hungarian animation. The National Film Institute (NFI) has revealed the official Hungarian visual identity for the festival, designed by the talented Levente Szabó.
The festival will shine a spotlight on Hungarian animation creators, studios, producers, and the rich history of Hungarian animation. It will also provide a platform for emerging Hungarian talents to showcase their work. The Hungarian visual identity combines Annecy’s iconic rabbit symbol with elements of Hungarian visual culture, paying homage to the traditions and development of Hungarian animation while incorporating a fresh and contemporary approach.
Levente Szabó, the illustrator behind the official visual identity, expressed his excitement at being part of such a prestigious project. He emphasized the challenge of creating a concept that captures both the essence of the festival and the unique features of Hungarian animation.
Marcel Jean, the festival’s artistic director, announced that Levente Szabó has already infused the Hungarian colors into the rabbit, and the official poster for the Annecy Festival will be unveiled soon. The festival aims to celebrate Hungarian animation’s cultural heritage, which has evolved continuously across generations.
Csaba Káel, Government Commissioner for Film and President of the National Film Institute, stated that the official Hungarian visual identity unveiling marks the beginning of an exciting period in preparation for the festival. He highlighted that the Hungarian animation industry, with its dynamic present, rich heritage, and promising future, will take center stage at Annecy.
Leading up to the festival, the Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival, in collaboration with the National Film Institute, will host a pitch forum to select young Hungarian talents who will present their projects at Annecy. Additionally, the festival organizers recently announced the selection of short films for the June event, including works such as “Dog Ear,” “Whim,” and “The Last Drop.”
