Hungary, Slovakia, and Serbia Leaders Unite to Combat Illegal Migration
Hungarian, Slovak, and Serbian leaders come together to discuss joint action against illegal migration
The Hungarian and Slovak prime ministers, along with the Serbian president, recently met in Komárno (Révkomárom), Slovakia to discuss joint action against illegal migration. The meeting, which took place earlier today, was described as exceptional by Robert Fico, the Slovak Prime Minister.
During the press conference, Fico emphasized the importance of protecting the EU’s external borders and expressed gratitude towards Serbia for their efforts in curbing illegal migration. Fico also voiced his support for Serbia’s membership in the EU, stating that it is a legitimate ambition.
Aleksandar Vučić, the Serbian President, highlighted the significant reduction in the number of migrants this year as a result of joint work between the three countries. He also pointed out the importance of peace, which is not always popular among opinion leaders in Europe.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his gratitude for being invited to the trilateral summit and noted the strong support shown by Hungarians towards Slovakia during the recent assassination attempt on Fico. Orbán stressed the importance of regional cooperation and reiterated the need to protect Europe’s borders to avoid potential trouble caused by mass migration.
The leaders also discussed economic cooperation, with Orbán mentioning the crucial role of Serbia and Slovakia in Hungary’s energy supply. He proposed setting up hotspots in regions where migrants originate from and emphasized the need to enforce decisions on who can enter the EU.
Overall, the meeting concluded with the adoption of a joint declaration outlining key conclusions and the commitment to ongoing cooperation between Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia to address the challenges posed by illegal migration.
