Hungary Stands Against Legalizing Prostitution Promotion
Hungary Opposes EU Proposal to Legalize Prostitution and Open Prisons
The Hungarian government is taking a firm stance against two European Union proposals that are currently being discussed. Justice Minister Tuzson expressed Hungary’s opposition to the potential legalization of prostitution and the establishment of open prisons for minor offenders.
Regarding the proposal to decriminalize and license the promotion of prostitution, Tuzson emphasized that this goes against Hungary’s laws, as the promotion of prostitution is considered a criminal activity in the country. He stated that Hungary cannot support the decriminalization of prostitution, and there is no EU treaty that can force the country to adhere to such a decision. Tuzson also rejected the argument that legalizing prostitution could help combat organized crime and made it clear that Hungary firmly rejects this approach.
In addition to the prostitution proposal, Tuzson also spoke out against the idea of holding minor offenders in open prisons, where they would be housed in “dwellings, in their own rooms” rather than traditional prison settings. He argued that this measure would remove the actual punishment from the punishment and that Hungary cannot support the initiative. Tuzson emphasized Hungary’s focus on the needs of crime victims and the government’s efforts to establish a network of help centers for them.
Despite these objections, the Hungarian government has expressed its support for EU proposals aimed at combating organized crime, particularly drug-related crimes. Tuzson stressed the importance of effective and coordinated efforts in this area and stated that Hungary will back all such endeavors.
The government’s position reflects its commitment to upholding its own laws and policies while also actively engaging in EU discussions on crime prevention and law enforcement.
