Hungary’s Foreign Minister Stresses Importance of Turkey for Energy Security

Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, called Turkey a reliable and predictable transit partner for energy security during his visit to Ankara on Wednesday. Without Turkey’s transit route, Hungary’s energy security cannot be guaranteed and the TurkStream gas pipeline is the only reliable east-west pipeline in Europe, according to Szijjártó. The Hungarian government also plans to rely on Turkey’s role as a gas transit country for an agreement to purchase gas from Azerbaijan. Nuclear energy was also discussed between the countries, especially as Hungary and Turkey are building nuclear power plants using the same technology. Szijjártó also attended the inauguration of Hungary’s Medicor’s incubator plant and announced that the Hungarian government had provided a grant for the project, which is set to start production in the second half of the year. It was also announced that Medicor will move its research and development activities to Ankara for pioneering efforts to make services for premature babies more effective.
