Hungary’s Former PM Predicts Huxit Catastrophe After Exiting EU

Former Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai recently shared his thoughts on Hungary’s EU membership and the possibility of a Huxit during a global security forum in Prague. Bajnai, who served as Prime Minister from 2009 to 2010, highlighted the changing political landscape in Hungary and the rise of new political forces in the country.
After the resignation of former Prime Minister Gyurcsány in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, Bajnai took over the reins of power. Despite attempts by Gyurcsány to regain political prominence with the Democratic Coalition party, his support has been waning in recent years. A new political force led by Péter Magyar has emerged, posing a challenge to the ruling Fidesz party.
At the global security forum, Bajnai discussed the structural changes in the Hungarian economy and society under Prime Minister Orbán’s leadership. He expressed concerns about Orbán’s push to create a society dependent on the state, leading to a potential shift towards a party-state model where loyalty to the regime is paramount.
Bajnai also raised the issue of a possible Huxit, highlighting the economic consequences that Hungary could face if it were to leave the EU. He pointed out that the Orbán government’s disregard for EU rules could eventually lead to a scenario where Hungary exits the European Union.
While Bajnai emphasized the importance of EU membership for Hungary’s economy, he noted that there are forces within the country seeking to undermine the country’s ties to the EU. As discussions around a possible Huxit continue, the future of Hungary’s relationship with the European Union remains uncertain.
