Hungary’s gas reserves ready for winter heating season

Hungary Fully Prepared for Winter with 6 Billion Cubic Meters of Gas in Storage

Hungary is all set for the upcoming winter season with 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas in storage facilities, announced the energy ministry on Saturday. Last year, Hungarian households consumed just over 3 billion cbm of natural gas, while the economy required 5.5 billion cbm. The ministry revealed that more than 70 percent of the total gas consumption of about 8.5 billion cbm was available before the onset of harsh winter conditions.

This year, annual consumption is expected to dip below 8 billion cbm, which means that reserves will likely cover a greater proportion of actual needs. Hungary has also managed to meet the EU’s requirement for member states to have gas storage facilities 90 percent full by November 1st, achieving this goal ahead of schedule by the start of September.

Additionally, the ministry reported that gas supplies are flowing smoothly thanks to an adequate level of imports and domestic production. Hungarian household gas prices remain the lowest in Europe, attributed to the government’s efforts to keep utility costs low. Overall, Hungary appears well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the upcoming winter season with its ample gas reserves and efficient gas supply system.
