Hungary’s Role in Expanding UN Peacekeeping Missions
Hungary Ready to Contribute to Strengthening UN Peacekeeping Activities
Hungary has expressed its willingness to contribute to the strengthening of United Nations (UN) peacekeeping activities as part of its efforts to reduce global armed conflicts and the risk of a third world war. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó made this statement during the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Accra, Ghana.
According to the Hungarian Foreign Minister, global security is at its worst since the end of the Cold War, with over 30 serious armed conflicts across the world. He emphasized that Europe is no exception, as war is raging on the continent and in the Middle East as well. Additionally, he warned of the risk of destabilization in the Sahel region and the potential for mass migratory flows towards Europe, posing a serious security risk.
Szijjártó stressed that it is in the central security interests of Hungary, Europe, and the entire international community to put an end to as many armed conflicts as possible. He also emphasized the importance of the UN’s role in peace-building and peacekeeping and called for the organization to fulfill its original purpose as a platform for dialogue between parties in conflict.
Hungary is already actively involved in UN peacekeeping missions, with Hungarian soldiers and police officers participating in four such missions. The government has also pledged to contribute to the expansion of these activities, providing financial support and technological development. Hungary is ready to support peacekeeping missions with its heavy airlift capacity and military training programs for special forces.
The Hungarian government’s commitment to strengthening UN peacekeeping capacity reflects its dedication to global peace and security. With its contributions, Hungary aims to play an active role in resolving armed conflicts and promoting stability through international cooperation and dialogue.
