Hungary’s Sovereignty Protection Office accuses EU-funded CERV programme of financing Soros-affiliated pressure groups

The European Commission’s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme (CERV) has come under scrutiny for its ties to the Soros network, with accusations that it is being used to finance political pressure campaigns. According to the Sovereignty Protection Office, CERV, which is described as the “Brussels-based arm of the Soros organisations,” has been used to funnel EU funds to groups affiliated with George Soros instead of Hungarian civil organizations.

The office’s analysis of the CERV Program launched in 2021 revealed that the framework for applications had been modified to align with the interests of the Soros network, allowing them to access funding intended for civil groups. Despite only making up a quarter of civil organizations, the Soros network received three-quarters of the CERV funds in Hungary, totaling nearly HUF 5 billion (EUR 12.2m).

These funds were reportedly used to shape public discourse, spread misinformation, and exert international pressure on countries deemed rebellious by the European Commission. The Sovereignty Protection Office highlighted the impact on Hungary, noting that the country had received only a fraction of the EU funds it was entitled to due to this manipulation of funds.

Critics argue that this misuse of EU funds not only violates the sovereignty of member states but also goes against the interests of Hungarian taxpayers. The situation raises concerns about transparency, accountability, and the influence of external actors on political processes within the EU.
