Hungary’s Support Elevates Norcia Monastery to Abbey Status
Hungarian Government Supports Rebuilding of 10th-century Monastery in Norcia
Tristan Azbej, the foreign ministry’s state secretary, has highlighted the importance of the Hungarian government’s support in the restoration of a 10th-century Benedictine monastery near Norcia, Italy. The monastery was severely damaged in a devastating earthquake in 2016, which claimed the lives of nearly 300 people and caused extensive destruction to cultural heritage sites and buildings.
Azbej informed MTI that the Benedictine friars had lost almost everything they owned due to the earthquake. He praised the Hungarian government for being the first and only foreign government to offer assistance in rebuilding the monastery. Through its Hungary Helps scheme, Hungary has contributed over 700,000 euros towards the restoration project.
As a gesture of gratitude, a chamber in the monastery will be dedicated to Hungary and King St. Stephen to commemorate Hungary’s support. The monastery, which has recently been elevated to the status of an abbey, continues to preserve its rich history and spiritual legacy.
The rebuilding of the monastery in Norcia serves as a symbol of international cooperation and solidarity in the preservation of cultural heritage. The Hungarian government’s commitment to supporting the restoration efforts underscores the importance of safeguarding historical landmarks for future generations to appreciate and cherish.
