Hungary’s Territory Reclamation Plan Stuns Europe: Romanian Politician’s Ambitious Proposal to Take Back Land from Ukraine
Călin Georgescu, the winner of the first round of the Romanian presidential elections, has sparked controversy with his nationalist and far-right views. One of the key aspects of his platform is territorial revision, which would involve annexing parts of Ukraine to Romania, Hungary, and Poland. Georgescu argues that the current borders of Ukraine are artificial and predicts that its partition is inevitable.
In a recent interview, Georgescu highlighted Northern Bukovina and the Buzac region as areas of natural interest for Romania, and also expressed claims over parts of Maramures and Transcarpathia, historically belonging to the Kingdom of Hungary.
These revisionist ideas are not new within Romanian politics. Diana Șoșoacă, another far-right politician, had previously proposed reclaiming former Romanian territories in Ukraine, including northern Maramures.
Interestingly, these ideas align with statements made by Russian political figures. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, has suggested that the partition of Ukraine is inevitable, with Poland, Hungary, and Romania seeking to regain former territories.
While Georgescu and others may currently only be making political declarations about their territorial claims, such rhetoric could lead to diplomatic tensions and instability in the region. The historical complexities and changing hands of these territories over time are often cited as justification for these claims.
Georgescu’s vision also involves dividing territories between Hungary and Poland, with some parts potentially returning to Hungary. However, he refers to the rest of Ukraine as Russia’s “Little Russia,” invoking a clear reference to Russian imperial ambitions.
These proposed geopolitical transformations could significantly alter the map of Eastern Europe, but they face challenges under the current international legal framework. Nonetheless, with ongoing conflicts and shifting power dynamics in the region, territorial disputes and conflicts cannot be completely discounted in the future. The impact of these revisionist ideas on regional stability remains a significant concern.
