Hungary’s Tourism Sector at Risk due to Possible Airbnb Restrictions
Hungary’s tourism sector is facing potential disruption as experts debate restrictions on Airbnb and private accommodations. The proposed changes could have a significant impact on thousands of properties, challenge tourism goals, and affect the economy.
Recent discussions among tourism experts in Hungary have raised the possibility of overhauling Airbnb operations and imposing restrictions on private accommodations, according to reports from Portfolio. If these changes are implemented, it could affect an estimated 14,000 to 16,000 properties in Budapest and 30,000 to 35,000 properties nationwide. There are talks of limiting the operation of private accommodations to 150-180 days per year.
This potential policy aligns with similar restrictions in many European countries, where there is a belief that tourists would prefer hotels without private accommodations. However, the two groups of visitors (those who opt for private accommodations and those who choose hotels) tend to be distinct with little overlap. Limiting private accommodations could lead foreign tourists to choose alternative destinations over Budapest if sufficient accommodations are not available.
Pál Frankó, President of the National Association of Rural and Agrotourism, expressed concerns about the potential restrictions, emphasizing that such a decision would not align with the development of domestic tourism. Balázs Schumicky, President of the Association of Hungarian Apartment Owners, also raised objections to the limitations on rental days, stating that it would render private accommodations in Budapest unfeasible.
Despite claims that private accommodations have a competitive advantage, Schumicky argued that laws apply equally to both private accommodations and hotels, including fire safety regulations. Limiting private accommodations could also impact the 2030 strategy of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, as tourism contributes significantly to Hungary’s GDP.
