Türkiye’s Hydroelectric Power Plants Reach 32 Thousand Megawatts Installed Power
As of February 28, the total installed power of Türkiye’s hydroelectric power plants has reached 32 thousand 203 megawatts. The Hydroelectric Power Plants Industry Business People Association (HESİAD) President Elvan Tuğsuz Güven stated that Türkiye has high potential in the hydroelectric sector, with the installed power of the country able to be increased by 13 thousand 500 megawatts through an investment of $16 billion.
Güven emphasized that with the implementation of this potential, the existing total installed power of hydroelectric power plants could reach 55 thousand megawatts. He highlighted the importance of investments required for energy production and discussed the technical and economic solutions for long-term storage of renewable energy resources.
In order to utilize renewable energy resources effectively, Güven suggested that pump-storage power plant investments should be converted into investments by both the public and private sectors. He mentioned the importance of regulation in supply-demand balance, production-consumption profiles, and the competitiveness of the energy market.
Güven also pointed out the need for attractive investment environments to attract both domestic and foreign investors for the development and growth of Türkiye. With the potential for new annual investments in the hydroelectric sector, Türkiye has the opportunity to further establish itself as a key player in the renewable energy market.
With a focus on achieving net zero emissions targets and increasing renewable energy capacities, Türkiye’s hydroelectric sector stands poised to play a crucial role in the country’s sustainable energy transition.
