ICC Chief Prosecutor Seeks Arrest Warrant: Controversial Decision Sparks Outrage

In his recent interview with the French channel LCI, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor, accusing her of establishing a false equivalence between Hamas leaders and the democratically elected leaders of Israel. Netanyahu described the application for an arrest warrant against him as “madness,” claiming that the justifications given by the ICC Chief Prosecutor were fabricated.

Netanyahu refuted the court’s claims that Israel had a policy of starving civilians, stating that they had done everything to prevent famine in Gaza. He defended Israel’s actions in Gaza, arguing that civilian casualties were the lowest rate seen in modern urban warfare compared to military casualties.

Addressing the ongoing protests against Israel worldwide, Netanyahu accused activists of targeting Israel’s democracy. He also expressed doubt about recognizing a Palestinian state, expressing concerns that it could reward terrorists.

In response to questions about Israel’s occupation of Gaza, Netanyahu emphasized the need to be able to enter the region at any time to stop terrorists, although he was unsure if occupying Gaza would be necessary.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people gathered in front of the television building to protest Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the ICC’s decision to apply for an arrest warrant against Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

ICC Chief Prosecutor Kerim Han announced that there were reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu and Gallant bore criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Han highlighted violations of the Rome Statute, including the starvation of civilians as a war crime and deliberate attacks against civilian populations as war crimes.

Han pointed out that hunger was used as a weapon of war in Gaza, leading to deprivation of basic human needs and attacks on civilians waiting in food queues. He emphasized that these actions were part of a joint plan to use hunger as a method of war against the civilian population of Gaza, which was perceived as a threat to Israel.

The Chief Prosecutor reminded Israel of its obligation to comply with international humanitarian law, stating that the means chosen to achieve military objectives in Gaza were deliberately causing the death of civilians and other violations of human rights. Netanyahu and Gallant now face an arrest warrant for their alleged involvement in these crimes against humanity.
