ICC Requests New Arrest Warrant in Libya Investigation, says Chief Prosecutor Han

ICC Requests Arrests of Four Individuals Involved in Crimes in Libya

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, has requested the arrest of four individuals involved in crimes in Libya. Khan made the request in his report to the United Nations Security Council on the investigation of the situation in Libya.

Khan noted that the court has accepted four of his six requests for arrests and is yet to decide on the other two requests made around three to four weeks ago. The prosecutor also pointed out that the names of the individuals who have been issued arrest warrants have not been made public, but he urged the court to disclose their identities to the public.

The ICC has been investigating crimes committed in Libya since 2011. Khan noted that they have developed a new approach to investigate the crimes more dynamically and effectively, using new technologies and investigation techniques. The prosecutor stressed that cooperation with local authorities in Libya is crucial to the success of the investigation.

Khan also emphasized the importance of using local courts and authorities in Libya to ensure justice and punish the criminals. He announced that the ICC prosecutor’s office would contact local authorities about the possibility of opening a field office in Libya.

During his visit to the Libyan city of Tarhuna in November 2022, Khan listened to the victims’ relatives and witnessed the devastating impact of the crimes committed in Libya. The prosecutor reiterated the importance of investigating these crimes at the ICC in The Hague to bring justice to the victims and hold the perpetrators accountable.
