The Ata Ice Museum at Atatürk University in Erzurum: A Unique Experience for Art Students
Located in Erzurum, one of Turkey’s cities known for its harsh winters, the Ata Ice Museum stands as the only ice museum in the country. Situated within the Faculty of Fine Arts of Atatürk University, the museum was inaugurated in 2019 and has been offering a unique artistic experience to both students and visitors.
Led by faculty members from the university’s sculpture department, the museum continually develops new projects and hosts various exhibitions to captivate its audience. Students partake in an artistic journey that begins with ice production, where they transform massive ice molds into intricate works of art under the guidance of their teachers.
The process involves shaping the ice using tools such as motorized and normal saws, knives, and irons, with the latter being used to partially melt the ice at temperatures ranging from 100 to 200 degrees. Professor Dr. Mustafa Bulat, the Head of the Sculpture Department and the Coordinator of the Ata Ice Museum, emphasized the hands-on nature of the students’ work, highlighting the use of heated tools at sub-zero temperatures and the use of electric saws for shaping the ice.
Notably, the museum has served as an active hub for events and activities since its establishment, reflecting its dynamic role within the university. Professor Bulat also shed light on the meticulous process of ice production, where blocks of ice are meticulously cut, stored, and eventually transformed into architectural marvels, all under the hands-on training of the students.
Students receive 5 hours of education per week, immersing themselves in the challenging yet rewarding art of ice sculpting. One such student, Furkan Dinç, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to study at the museum, emphasizing the uniqueness of their ice sculpture training. Likewise, Handan Polat, a third-year student, shared her enthusiasm for the department and her involvement in constructing intricate ice sculptures.
