Fire Breaks Out in Forest Surrounded by Red Pine Trees in Marmaris

A fire broke out in the forest surrounded by red pine trees in the Sarıana District of Marmaris on June 23 at 15:30. The incident was reported to the 112 Emergency Call Center by those who saw the rising smoke. Immediate action was taken, and a team of firefighters and emergency responders were dispatched to the scene.

To combat the fire, 9 helicopters and 6 aircraft were deployed from the air, while on the ground, there were 6 pickup trucks, 2 first response vehicles, 34 water pumps, 17 water supply vehicles, 6 dozers, 6 trailers, 13 minibuses, 5 fuel tankers, 1 mobile repair vehicle, 1 fire management vehicle, 20 technical personnel, 18 forest engineers, and 380 workers.

The fire was finally brought under control after 3 hours of intense effort. Unfortunately, 5 hectares of forest were damaged in the process. The extinguishing works were supported by the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, whose firefighters played a crucial role in containing the fire.

However, there was an alarming discovery amidst the fire incident. A man’s body was found in the fire area, leading investigators to believe that the fire was intentionally started after the victim’s body was thrown into the forest. The Muğla and Marmaris Chief Public Prosecutor’s Offices immediately launched a large-scale investigation into this heinous crime.

A person identified as MA was taken into custody regarding the body. The suspect, who had a history of various crimes such as theft, deliberate injury, sexual abuse, and threats, was charged with ‘deliberately burning forest’ and ‘deliberate killing’. Unfortunately, due to lack of evidence, the suspect was released after the police proceedings.

Subsequently, an autopsy was conducted on the body at the Muğla Forensic Medicine Institute, revealing that the victim had been strangled to death. Blood samples were taken to determine the victim’s identity and were sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute for analysis.

Intensive efforts are being made to inspect the camera records in the region, one by one, in order to gather more evidence. The investigation into the incident, which has been assigned to two prosecutors, is being conducted comprehensively. The Muğla Provincial Security Directorate Public Security Branch Murder Bureau teams have also been assigned to apprehend the suspect or suspects.

After analyzing multiple security camera images and conducting interviews with citizens, the body was identified as that of Khiari Mohammed, a Belgian national. Mohammed’s relatives have been summoned to Turkey for identification and DNA matching.

This tragic incident not only resulted in the loss of forested land but also exposed a gruesome crime. The authorities are determined to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice and ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future. The investigation continues with the hope of shedding more light on the circumstances surrounding this event.
