For İlker Dağker, running the family-owned Bereket Bakery is not just a job – it’s a way of life. After his grandfather, Yusuf Salih, took over the bakery and his father continued the tradition, İlker is now the third generation at the helm of the beloved oven. With his son Ahmet set to inherit the business, the legacy of Bereket Bakery looks set to continue for years to come.
Despite being 71 years old, İlker has no plans of slowing down. He intends to stay at the oven for another decade, as long as his health allows. He believes that if he were to come to the world again, he would choose to do the same job, emphasizing the importance of doing what you love.
The secret to the success of Bereket Bakery lies in the quality of its products. İlker meticulously weighs each batch of dough and ensures that every bakery item meets his high standards. He never compromises on quality, which is evident in the taste of their popular products like rice, cheese pastries, flatbreads, and desserts.
Running the bakery is no easy task – İlker starts his day at 3:00 am, seven days a week, and is involved in every aspect of the operation. Despite the long hours, he finds joy in his work and has built a loyal customer base over the years.
The history of Bereket Bakery dates back 200 years, from its origins as Anastas’s Oven to the present day. İlker recalls the journey that led his family to take over the bakery and turn it into a beloved institution in the city of Nicosia.
With branches in various locations, including Kizilbaş and Kyrenia, Bereket Bakery has become a brand synonymous with quality and tradition. İlker believes that staying true to their roots and focusing on what they do best has been key to keeping the brand alive.
Despite the changing landscape of Nicosia, with new establishments opening in the area, İlker remains optimistic about the future. He sees a positive change in the walls of the city and believes that the younger generation will help preserve its heritage.
Outside of work, İlker leads a fulfilling life, with a passion for tango dancing. Despite the demands of running a bakery, he makes time for his hobbies and enjoys dancing with his partner.
