Implementing Second Stage of Ceasefire Agreement in Gaza: Hamas Rejecting New Offers

Hamas Rejects Ceasefire Proposal Despite Positive Response from US Mediator
Hamas spokesperson Hazim Kasım has expressed disappointment in the response from Hamas despite a positive reaction from US President Donald Trump’s Middle East Special Representative, Steve Witkoff, to a new ceasefire offer. Kasım emphasized the importance of implementing the second stage of the ceasefire agreement rather than making new agreements.
In a recent statement, Kasım stated, “What needs to be done is not to make new and secondary agreements, but to implement the second stage of the ceasefire agreement. It guarantees the goals to implement the stages of the agreement. Applying the threat language makes a positive result.”
Kasım also stressed the need for all parties involved to adhere to the signed agreements and prioritize the implementation of the agreed upon issues. He noted that the US administration had offered a framework for the agreement in January, and mediators, including Witkoff, had taken steps towards its success.
Israeli State Television Kan reported on March 14 that Witkoff had suggested ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza as part of the discussions in Doha, Qatar. However, Hamas deemed the initial proposal to release more prisoners as unacceptable. Witkoff had proposed the release of 5 prisoners and the transfer of 9 prisoners’ remains, but Hamas rejected this offer.
Furthermore, Witkoff had suggested a 50-day ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners in Gaza during the month of Ramadan and the Jewish Holy Dough Feast. Despite these efforts, Hamas deemed the proposal to deliver positive response to unacceptable.
In response to the rejection, Witkoff stated, “The offer was reasonable and the Israelis were informed about this, but after waiting 3 days, we received an unacceptable response from Hamas.” The situation remains tense as both parties continue to navigate the complexities of the ceasefire negotiations.
